H₂ Pipeline — ASME B31.12 Option B

Hydrogen · Fracture mechanics · Higher utilization with K_IH testing

ASME B31.12 Option B — Fracture Mechanics
Allows higher allowable stress (no Hf derate) provided K_I_applied ≤ K_IH(H₂) per ASME B31.12 Mandatory Appendix IX, with fracture mechanics per API 579 / BS 7910 and Newman-Raju semi-elliptic surface-flaw analysis.

Engineering Basis

  • Wall: t = P·D / (2·S·F·E) with F up to 0.72 (no Hf derate).
  • Newman-Raju surface flaw: K_I = M·σ_h·√(π·a/Q), Q = 1 + 1.464·(a/c)^1.65.
  • Pass criterion: K_I ≤ K_IH(H₂) / SF (default SF = 1.5 per Mandatory Appendix IX).
  • Requires measured K_IH per ASTM E1681 in hydrogen at design pressure.
  • Standards: ASME B31.12 Option B + Mandatory Appendix IX, API 579, BS 7910, ASTM E1681.
