H₂ Pipeline — ASME B31.12 Option A

Hydrogen · Performance factor (Hf) · Conservative wall thickness

ASME B31.12 Option A — Performance Factor Method
Wall thickness for hydrogen pipelines using ASME B31.12 Option A. The Material Performance Factor Hf (Table IX-5A) derates allowable stress vs equivalent natural-gas pipe to conservatively account for hydrogen embrittlement.
⚠ Screening / preliminary sizing only. Hf values are approximated from ASME B31.12-2023 Table IX-5A; final design wall thickness must use Hf interpolated from the actual published table for the project's grade × pressure combination. Option B (fracture-mechanics) may be required for grades > X70, high-population-density areas, or impure-H₂ service. Weld procedures must be qualified with HAZ hardness mapping. Engineering Basis

  • ASME B31.12 Option A: t = P·D / (2·S·F·E·Hf), with Hf from Table IX-3.1.1.
  • F default 0.50 (B31.12 conservative — vs 0.72 in B31.8 for natural gas).
  • Hf interpolated by grade and pressure — heavier derate at high P + high grade.
  • Lower-grade steels (X42-X65) preferred for H₂ service; X70+ requires HE testing per Mandatory Appendix IX.
  • Standards: ASME B31.12-2023, ASME B31.8 (NG cross-ref), API 5L PSL2, NACE/AMPP MR0175.
