H₂S Scavenger Bed Sizing

Iron sponge / SulfaTreat / SulfaTrap · GPSA 14e §21 · Waineo ABC 2019

Dry-media scavenger sizing
Sizes a dry-media iron-oxide scavenger bed (iron sponge, SulfaTreat, SulfaTrap, enhanced iron sponge) to remove H₂S from raw biogas to pipeline-spec outlet (typically ≤4 ppmv). Auto-selects bed geometry (L/D ≈ 2), computes EBCT + velocity vs FeO 60–300 s / 5–10 ft/min range, and provides screening-grade OPEX from media + disposal costs.

Engineering Basis

  • Mass balance: H₂S_load = Q × ΔH₂S × ρ_H₂S; ρ_H₂S = 1.439 kg/m³ at 60°F / 14.696 psia.
  • Sizing: Media = H₂S_load × t_design / (Capacity × Utilization); V_bed = Media / ρ_bulk.
  • EBCT 60–300 s, velocity 5–10 ft/min for iron-oxide media (Waineo ABC 2019, GPSA §21).
  • Capacity defaults (industry mid-range, ±30%): iron sponge 0.20 / SulfaTreat 0.18 / SulfaTrap 0.30 / enhanced 0.28 kg H₂S/kg.
  • Pipeline spec typical 4 ppmv US interstate; 2 ppmv California / LCFS — confirm tariff before sizing.
  • Pricing caveat: 2024–26 screening order-of-magnitude only; final cost via vendor RFQ.
  • Standards: GPSA 14e §21+§22, ASTM D5504, 49 CFR §192, Waineo ABC 2019, 40 CFR 80.1426.
