PHMSA Crack Management Plan

Gas transmission ยท Crack management ยท 49 CFR 192.712 + API 1176

Crack Management Plan Helper
Assembles the required plan elements, a tailored crack-detection inspection recommendation, the mitigation hierarchy, and the reassessment cue per 49 CFR 192.712 (Gas Transmission Final Rule) and API RP 1176.
โš  Safety-critical โ€” planning aid only. This assembles plan elements and a detection/mitigation outline from your inputs. It does not run the fracture-mechanics model, Paris-law growth, or remaining-life analysis โ€” those need a validated model (CorLAS / API 579 / BS 7910) with SME review. Not for safety case submission, regulatory filing, or crack-management decisions without SME review.

Engineering Basis

  • ยง192.712: assess cracks with a technically-proven fracture-mechanics model appropriate to the failure mode (ductile/brittle/both).
  • Cyclic-susceptible defects: fatigue analysis via Paris' law (or equivalent).
  • Remaining life = time for the crack to grow to a size that fails at MAOP; reassess before 50% of remaining life.
  • Detection: EMAT/UT crack ILI for SCC; seam ILI + hydrostatic spike test for LF-ERW seam & selective seam corrosion.
  • Mitigation hierarchy: pressure reduction โ†’ grind/sleeve/replace โ†’ root-cause (recoat/CP, cycle management) โ†’ reassess.
  • Standards: 49 CFR 192.712 (87 FR 52270, 2022), API RP 1176, ยง192.624(c)(2)/192.632, ยง192.933, ASME B31.8S. (API 1183 covers dents, not cracks.)
