Oil Barrel Converter: Barrels to Gallons, Liters, m³ & Tons

Convert bbl, gallons, liters, m³ and tons · mass from API gravity (API MPMS 11.5.3)

Barrels ↔ gallons, liters, m³, ft³ and tons
1 US oil barrel = 42 US gallons = 158.987 liters. Volume conversions are exact definitions. To convert to or from mass (metric tons, short tons, pounds), enter the API gravity: density depends on the oil, so barrels per ton is not a fixed number.

Input

°API

Key Relations

1 bbl = 42 US gal = 158.987294928 L
D₆₀ = 141.5/(°API + 131.5) × 999.016 kg/m³
bbl per metric ton = (1000/D₆₀) ÷ 0.158987
Short ton = 2,000 lb · Long ton = 2,240 lb

Engineering Notes

  • Barrels here are standard (60 °F) volumes. To correct an observed volume for temperature use the VCF calculator.
  • Mass is true mass (in vacuum). For weight-in-air and 15 °C bases see the Density / Weight / Volume tool.
  • Typical crude is 30-40 °API, about 7.2-7.6 bbl per metric ton (7.19 at 30 °API, 7.63 at 40 °API).

How to Convert Barrels to Metric Tons

  1. Get the API gravity from the crude assay or the certificate of quality. Heavier oil (lower API) means fewer barrels per ton.
  2. Convert API to density: D₆₀ = 141.5 / (API + 131.5) × 999.016 kg/m³.
  3. Convert barrels to mass: tonnes = barrels × 0.158987 × D₆₀ ÷ 1000. This calculator does it for you and also gives barrels per ton in the other direction.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many gallons are in an oil barrel?

A US oil barrel is exactly 42 US gallons, which is 158.987294928 liters or 0.158987 cubic meters. (A beer barrel is 31 gallons; the 42-gallon oil barrel is the petroleum standard.)

How many barrels are in a metric ton of oil?

It depends on the API gravity. Barrels per metric ton = (1000 / D60) / 0.158987 where D60 = 141.5/(API+131.5) x 999.016 kg/m3. A 25 API crude is about 6.96 bbl/tonne, a 35 API crude about 7.41 and a 40 API crude about 7.63.

How many barrels are in a cubic meter?

1 cubic meter = 6.28981 US barrels (1 / 0.158987). This is a pure volume conversion and does not depend on the oil.

Why does the barrel-to-ton conversion need API gravity?

Tons measure mass and barrels measure volume, so the link is density. Lighter oils (higher API) are less dense, so a ton occupies more barrels. There is no single barrels-to-tonnes factor for all crude.

Is this the same as a temperature-corrected barrel?

No. This tool converts units of a standard 60 degF volume. If you have an observed volume at another temperature, first correct it to 60 degF with API MPMS 11.1 (see the VCF calculator), then convert.
