Taitel-Dukler 1976 Two-Phase Flow Pattern Prediction

Predict two-phase flow regime for horizontal or slightly-inclined gas-liquid pipelines per Taitel & Dukler (AIChE J 1976). Computes superficial velocities, Lockhart-Martinelli X, and Taitel-Dukler F/K/T dimensionless groups, then classifies the regime as stratified-smooth, stratified-wavy, intermittent (slug/plug), annular, or dispersed-bubble. Includes severe-slugging risk screen for terrain-induced slugging.

Taitel-Dukler Dimensionless Groups

Superficial velocity:

vSL = QL / A | vSG = QG / A

Lockhart-Martinelli (turbulent-turbulent):

X2 = (dP/dL)L,sup / (dP/dL)G,sup

Froude-like F:

F = √(ρG / (ρL − ρG)) · vSG / √(D · g · cos θ)

K (wave-stability):

K = F · √(ReSL) = F · vSL · D / νL · ?

Strictly K = F²·vSLL·D; written compactly above.

T (turbulence parameter):

T = √[ (dP/dL)L,sup / ( (ρL − ρG) · g · cos θ ) ]

Regime boundaries (approximate):

F < ~0.5 + hL-stability check → Stratified
K > 20 (in stratified zone) → Stratified Wavy
F > Fcrit(X) → Intermittent
X < ~1.6 in intermittent zone → Annular
T > Tcrit(X) → Dispersed Bubble
