H₂ Compressor Power & Stages
Multi-stage hydrogen compression using Schultz polytropic head with H₂-specific constants (k=1.41, MW=2.016, very high Cp). Reciprocating typically preferred over centrifugal due to Mach-limit issues at low MW.

Engineering Basis

  • Schultz polytropic head with H₂ constants k=1.41, MW=2.016 g/mol, Cp=14.3 kJ/(kg·K), Z≈1.05.
  • Reciprocating typical: η_p=0.78, max PR/stage=3.0. Centrifugal: η_p=0.65, max PR/stage=1.5 (Mach-limited).
  • DOE H2A baseline specific energy: 2.5–4.0 kWh/kg for 30→700 bar service.
  • Standards: GPSA §13, ASME PTC-10, API STD 618 (recip), API STD 617 (centrifugal), ASME B31.12.
