Pig Launcher & Receiver Sizing

Design Standard ยท Barrel Dimensions ยท Valve Sizing

Launcher/Receiver Design Calculator
Determines standard dimensions for pig launchers and receivers based on carrier pipe size. Includes barrel diameter, reducer specifications, and minimum valve sizes per industry best practices (Design Standard Section 4000).

Design Parameters

Fabricated assemblies in Class 1, 2, or 3 areas must use 0.50 design factor (or 0.60 for Class 2 per some interpretations, but 0.50 is standard for stations).

Design Notes

  • Barrel Sizing: Based on standard practice of oversized barrels (typically +2" to +6" over carrier pipe) to facilitate pig loading/unloading.
  • Lengths: Launcher barrel length is typically 1.5x pig length + 2ft. Receiver barrel is 2.0x pig length to accommodate debris.
  • Valves: Kicker and bypass valves should be sized to prevent excessive pressure drop or velocity.
  • Code: Designs must comply with ASME B31.8 / 49 CFR 192. Fabricated assemblies in stations usually require 0.50 design factor.
