About Lean Oil Absorption

Lean oil absorption is a physical absorption process used to recover NGLs from natural gas. The process uses a refrigerated hydrocarbon liquid (lean oil) to preferentially absorb Cā‚ƒ+ hydrocarbons from the gas stream.

Process Flow

  • Recovery: Feed gas contacts lean oil in absorber
  • Rejection: Rich oil flashed to recover methane
  • Separation: NGL products separated by distillation

Typical Operating Ranges

  • Oil/Gas Ratio: 1-4 gal/MSCF
  • Absorber Pressure: 300-600 psia
  • Lean Oil Temp: 60-100°F
  • Cā‚ƒ+ Recovery: 85-95%

Design Considerations

  • Lower temperatures improve absorption
  • Higher pressure increases recovery
  • Oil composition affects selectivity
  • Refrigeration system is key cost driver
