Gas Density Calculator
Calculates natural gas density at operating conditions using real gas equations of state. Applies compressibility corrections for accurate mass flow and pipeline inventory calculations.

Operating Conditions

psig
°F

Gas Properties

-
-

Z-factor typically 0.85-0.95 for natural gas. Use 1.0 for ideal gas approximation.

Calculation Method

Real gas equation recommended for high pressure applications (>100 psig)

Formula

ρ = (P × MW) / (Z × R × T)
ρ = Gas density (lb/ft³)
P = Absolute pressure (psia)
MW = Molecular weight (lb/lbmol)
Z = Compressibility factor
R = Gas constant (10.73 psia·ft³/lbmol·°R)
T = Absolute temperature (°R)

Important Notes

  • Gas gravity is ratio of gas molecular weight to air (28.97)
  • Z-factor accounts for non-ideal gas behavior at high pressure
  • Ideal gas law acceptable for low pressure (<100 psig)
  • Real gas equation required for accurate high pressure calculations
  • Standard conditions: 14.7 psia, 60°F (or 520°R)
