Calculation Method

Estimates hydrate formation temperature using the Katz correlation. Hydrates form when free water contacts natural gas at low temperatures and elevated pressures.

Prevention Methods

• MEG/TEG injection
• Methanol injection
• Dehydration (< 7 lb/MMscf)
• Heating/insulation
• Depressurization

Formula (Katz Correlation)

T = A × log(P) + B
T = Hydrate temperature (°F)
P = Pressure (psia)
A, B = f(gas gravity)

Important Notes

  • Katz correlation valid for sweet natural gas (0.55-0.70 gravity)
  • Requires free water present - dry gas (< 7 lb H₂O/MMscf) won't form hydrates
  • Acid gases (CO₂, H₂S) shift hydrate temperature upward
  • Maintain 10-20°F margin below hydrate temperature for safe operation
  • Hydrate blockages can occur rapidly - monitor temperatures carefully
